IT – Il Mercado do Bolhão è uno degli edifici piu’ simbolici del centro storico di Oporto ma non solo è anche il mercato più importante della città, l’edificio fu progettato nel 1850 dell’architetto António Correia da Silva mentre la sua inaugurazione risale al 1914.

Di evidente stile neoclassico, è caratterizzato da un corpo di fabbrica unico distribuito su due piani ed una piazza centrale a cielo aperto e un gran numero di attività commerciali alimentari nei porticati e nelle aree interne, verso le quattro strade che lo delimitano (Fernandes Tomás a Nord, Alexandre Braga ad Est, Formosa a Sud e Sá da Bandeira ad ovest).

É stato classificato come edificio di alto interesse storico, ma anche di interesse pubblico solamente dal 2006 e, anche se attualmente si trova in elevato stato di degrado, è una delle principali sfide di ristrutturazione urbana a Oporto. Ancora oggi rifornisce gli abitanti di Oporto di pesce, carne, verdure e fiori; è un luogo visitato da politici e personaggi pubblici in varie occasioni e da innumerevoli turisti.

EN – The Mercado do Bolhão is one of the buildings more ‘symbolic of the historic center of Oporto, but not only is the most important market of the city, the building was designed in 1850 by architect António Correia da Silva as his active since 1914.

Clear neoclassical style, is characterized by a unique body of the building on two floors and a central square in the open and a large number of food businesses in the arcades and in the inland areas, around four streets that surround it (Fernandes Tomás north, Alexandre Braga in the East, South and Formosa to Sá da Bandeira west). It was classified as historically interesting building, but also of public interest only since 2006 and, although currently is in high state of degradation, it is one of the main challenges of urban restructuring in Porto.

Still it supplies the inhabitants of Oporto fish, meat, vegetables and flowers; It is a place visited by politicians and public figures in various occasions and by countless tourists.
